BROOKLYN ACADEMY OF MUSIC CULTURAL DISTRICT

The master plan for Brooklyn Academy of Music, commissioned by BAM Local Development Corporation, is being done in collaboration with Rem Koolhaas and OMA. The blocks surrounding BAM Opera House, currently populated by empty lots used for day parking, will be converted into a mixed-use cultural district. The programming will include visual arts institutions, theaters, a performance library, dance rehearsal spaces, administrative spaces for cultural institutions, artists live/work lofts, residential housing, and commercial programs. The site will include a complex of new buildings, the conversion of existing structures, and a network of public spaces. Prior to any building activity, a process of "acculturation" will take place through the temporary occupation of car lots with time-share programs such as drive-in cinema, art installations, and performance events using existing site surfaces. There will also be permanent interventions into undervalued site lots such as a vertical park and an urban beach.
