BAGGAGE HANDLERS' UNION SHOWROOM

The Baggage Handler’s Union Showroom is a display headquarters for the Japanese bag manufacturer. The site is located in Tokyo, Japan and is of the typically thin dimension of 16’ x 50’. The concept of the design deals with exploring the relationship between commodity, commerce and display. The objects are housed within display cases that are simultaneously transparent and opaque. The enclosures allude to notions of display akin to museums of “Natural History”. The linear axis through the narrow space acts as the special organizer while a series of hovering volumes and a transparent picture window display articulate the two side walls. The materials of stone, wood, steel and glass are employed to produce varying degrees of transparency and opacity while articulating the space.
